The correct adjustment and positioning of the Berceau washable diaper

This Ma Boule De Couches® educational page was designed to guide parents in adjusting the height and correct positioning of the Berceau washable nappy, from the first uses.

It is based on a practical, visual and progressive approach , derived from field experience with families using washable nappies, in order to guarantee comfort, effectiveness and freedom of movement for the child.

The aim of this page is to help you understand and apply the correct techniques , clearly distinguishing between:

  • Height adjustment via pressure points , according to weight and growth.
  • the positioning of the diaper on the body , at the level of the stomach, hips and crotch,
  • the essential checkpoints to avoid common mistakes (layer too tight, too high, or incorrectly positioned).

Each step is explained in a simple, illustrated way and is directly applicable to everyday life.

Unlike a traditional instruction manual, this page offers a complete learning path , designed to be consulted at any time: first use, doubt about the setting, changes in morphology or simple verification.

It aims to make the gesture intuitive , without restrictive automatism, by reminding us that each baby is unique and that comfort always remains the best indicator .

Adjusting and fitting the washable crib diaper

1. How to properly adjust a Berceau washable nappy?

To properly adjust a Berceau washable diaper, start by adjusting the height snaps at the front to fit your baby's size. Then, fasten the front tabs loosely , making sure the diaper is positioned correctly in the groin crease. A properly adjusted diaper should be snug but comfortable , without any red marks on the skin.

2. How can you tell if the washable nappy is too tight?

A cloth diaper is too tight if it leaves deep marks on the tummy or thighs, if the baby seems uncomfortable, or if you can't slip a finger between the tummy and the diaper . The tabs should hold the diaper in place without compressing. A proper fit ensures both a leak-proof seal and freedom of movement .

3. Where should the snaps be positioned on a washable, adjustable diaper?

1. Pre-washing (essential)

Run a cotton cycle between 20°C and 30°C for at least 30 minutes . This first wash removes urine and residue before the main cycle. Use a small amount of detergent or simply plain water, depending on the load size.

2. The main wash

Run a long cotton cycle of at least 1 hour 30 minutes at 40°C for regular use or 60°C for deep cleaning or shared use. This program ensures complete hygienic maintenance. Avoid "eco" cycles, which are often too cold and don't rinse thoroughly enough.

3. Drying

Air dry in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. A gentle tumble dryer is only suitable for inserts; it is not recommended for PUL or waterproof bassinets.

4. Why does my washable nappy create a bulge at the front?

A slight bulge of fabric at the front is normal on a properly adjusted cloth diaper. This corresponds to the fabric folded over when adjusting the height. This bulge should not be stiff or compressed: it is part of the diaper's proper function and does not affect comfort or absorbency.

5. Should the Velcro fasteners be tightened to prevent leaks?

No. Leaks don't come from a lack of tightness, but most often from incorrect positioning or inadequate absorbency. Velcro fasteners that are too tight can even cause leaks by preventing the diaper from fitting snugly against the body. The diaper should be close to the body, not flat against it .

6. How to correctly position the washable nappy between the legs?

The diaper should be placed in the natural crease of the groin , without pulling excessively on the sides. On the Berceau washable diaper, the elastics are integrated and discreet: there's no need to try to make them visible. Proper positioning ensures comfort and leak-proof protection without leaving marks on the skin.

7. Do I need to adjust the washable diaper at each change?

Not necessarily. As long as your baby's size doesn't change, the height adjustment can remain the same. However, it's advisable to check the positioning and fastening of the Velcro at each diaper change , as the baby's shape and position can vary.

8. Does a properly fitted washable nappy need to be very tight around the thighs?

No. Contrary to popular belief, an effective cloth diaper doesn't constrict the thighs . It adapts to the baby's shape without compression. If the thighs are too tight, it can cause discomfort and leaks.

9. How to avoid adjustment errors with a washable nappy?

The most frequent mistakes are:

  • setting the pressures too high or too low
  • tighten the Velcro straps too much
  • aim to completely smooth the fabric
  • confusing height adjustment and tightening

By following a simple and progressive method, the adjustment becomes quick and intuitive.
